Do you feel your character can make a difference?
I've been wondering about this awhile and talked to a few people. I'd like some player feedback on how they feel their characters impact the world. While utterly destroying a faction isn't likely to happen from one person's attempt, I often wonder if people feel like they're not making any real impact on the world.
(Note, dungeons tend not to be cleaned out for obvious reasons) So here is the poll. Do you feel like your character can impact the world or do you think your hands are tied?

Of course my character can. This charming person has at least showed to some tasteless persons here, what does the word fashion really mean. I do not doubt that I'll become the first Queen here, because the ordinary people love me and men would die just to kiss my foot! Ooo .. Queen Lilly the First and Only! Sounds pretty good, doesn't it?

While most things i feel my characters do will not change the Physical form or the entire server. I Do feel through Rp my characters have changed players in various ways, which in essence changes Sundren as a whole.

Hhmmm...
I feel some characters can change things. Just not any of mine. All mine are either apathetic, shadowy, or so structured to one specific purpose (and that is to keep things as they are in Ursus' case) that they just won't try. Now, if you mean characters in general, I think they all have the chance of making changes if they really want to and try. Global (at least server-wide global) changes would be an epic undertaking and, personally, I don't think any single character should be able to make such changes. Now, a group of like-minded characters, all working diligently towards a change...different story and should eventually be able to make such changes. It should not happen over night, but it should be possible. I don't believe much in the whole "one man can make a difference" idea (bonus geek points to anyone who knows where the quote comes from :P ).

I left.. but as it was one of my main reasons for leaving, I decided to vote anyway..
The environment offers little incentive to change much unless you're an anarchist, and for the rest the world is so stable and the story set in stone that when you do try to significantly influence anything that wasn't envisioned by a DM to begin with, it's usually subtly spun in some other direction where a slight illusion of minor success is given so that it doesn't interfere with the bigger picture. It most often can't really be translated to the intended goal, despite any future efforts, brilliant ideas and possible unforeseen plot holes/opportunities a player attempts to take advantage of in a reasonable way. The result is that players mostly go for the wait and see and play along attitude. Sadly they will often play along even despite their supposed ethos, just to have something to do. That's how I felt about it, at least. |

I think it's important we concentrate on current events and players. We have changed things recently, and continue to do so. History is important, and we can learn lessons from it. But if it's simply sour grapes, it won't be helpful.
